Step Ahead Veterinary Physiotherapy bases techniques and treatment methods on current research, alongside continuously refreshing skills, and learning new approaches through
Continued Professional Development (CPD).
A range of physiotherapy services are on offer, primarily treating dogs and horses, however please contact me to discuss how physiotherapy can benefit other animals.
Physiotherapy treatment is frequently used for maintenance and conservative purposes, along with improving athletic performance and accelerating healing rate post injury or surgery.
Many orthopedic injuries benefit from physiotherapy treatment such as muscle tears, tendon and ligament rupture and degenerative disease such as arthritis and kissing spines.
Physiotherapy is also an effective treatment for neurological conditions such as intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) and wobblers syndrome.
Animal insurance policies often cover veterinary physiotherapy as a complementary therapy of which we can discuss upon enquiry or initial assessment.
Please see below a selection of physiotherapy services available to your animals.
Functional assessments are conducted as part of an initial assessment when the animal is first referred for physiotherapy. The process consists of a thorough gait analysis and palpation assessment, along with an in-depth discussion of the patient’s history and home lifestyle. Functional assessments are also incorporated into follow-up sessions to monitor progress of the patient and assess strengths and areas of weakness to focus on in the subsequent sessions.
Manual therapies such as massage, soft tissue mobilisation and myofascial release techniques are used to treat tissue dysfunction, act as a pain relief and relax musculature in distress. Joints are often assessed for range of motion to monitor pain and discomfort to ensure the correct treatment is provided. Stretches are also involved to aid mobility and flexibility within the patient thus improving movement.
Physiotherapy also includes the use of exercises to help improve proprioception, co-ordination, balance, flexibility and muscle strengthening. Exercises for dogs include the use of equipment such as wobble cushions, raised flatforms and pole work. REP for horses include different pole sequences, stretching and training aids. All techniques are considered as part of a ‘tool-box’ and a tailored programme will be developed for each animal.
Electrotherapy uses electrical energy as a form of medical treatment and is often used in conjunction with other physiotherapy techniques. A thorough assessment of the patient is required before any electrotherapy machine is used, in order to ensure the correct and most effective mode of treatment. Here at Step Ahead Veterinary Physiotherapy, we strive to invest in the most modern equipment available to ensure the most effective treatment is provided for your animal.
Correct home management, alongside effective physiotherapy treatment is key to ensuring that your animal is kept as comfortable as possible. An in-depth discussion will incorporate both aspects into your animal’s programme will take place upon initial assessment.
Home management discussions for dogs include factors such as exercise routine and housing and husbandry factors such as floor type, entrance and exit from the car and sleeping location.
Home management discussions for horses include exercise routines and stable management such as stable size and hay net location.
